Pay for Spices?

Ever been to the store and wonder why spices are so expensive? Well here's one that you can use on virtually anything!

I was recently in the store and was looking to get a new bottle of SPG (salt, pepper, and garlic) and saw that it was $10 for 12 ounces of this all-purpose seasoning. This equates to about $0.83 per ounce. Instead I decided to make my own.

You can make this seasoning in a variety of ways. A popular way I have heard of is a ratio of 7 kosher salt:2 course pepper:1 granulated garlic. I experimented a few different ways and found my favorite ratio is 5 kosher salt:2 coarse pepper:2 granulated garlic.

I start by simply mixing all of the ingredients into a bowl and only using a whisk to mix it up. for the 5 parts of Kosher Salt I will pour in 2 and a half cups, then with one cup of coarse ground pepper, and one cup of granulated garlic. If you do the math of half a cup as one part then it works out as 5:2:2. (Simplified below.)

Once everything is mixed together you can pour the contents into any container of your choice.

Now let's look at what we have created. You have used 36 ounces of your product and with everything left over you will have enough to make one more 36 ounce batch. The kosher salt was $2.38 for a 48 ounce box, coarse ground pepper was $4.97 for 26 ounces, and the granulated garlic was $8.94 for 26 ounces.

You spent $16.29 and will make 72 ounces of the seasoning, which is $0.23 an ounce. That saves you 60 cents an ounce or you could spend $60 and get 72 ounces of the premade stuff. Your choice.

Recipe:

2 1/2 cups - Kosher Salt

1 cup - coarse ground pepper

1 cup - granulated garlic powder

Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Stir with a wire whisk. Store and enjoy.
